Riba Dempel is the name of the central marketplace in Willemstad, the capital city of the island of Curaçao. It includes the 'floating market' of barques that moor there from neighboring Venezuela selling their fresh produce and fish as well as local stalls where cheap, fresh creole food is served to all comers. Like the creole kitchen, the music on this disc is a gumbo of African, European and regional Caribbean influences. Riba Dempel collects classics from the golden age of the indigenous Papiamento recording industry on Curaçao in the 1950s that were originally released on 78 rpms on the Hoyco and Musika labels.

"Vermenging op de markt"
Amsterdam, 18 september 2003 - "Riba Dempel is de naam van de grote markt in de haven van Willemstad, en daar kwam behalve vrachtgoed ook altijd veel muziek binnen, uit het hele Caribische gebied. De bloeitijd van de Papiamentse stijl die door vermenging ontstond, begin jaren vijftig, werd door twee liefhebbers vastgelegd in provisorische studio's achterin hun winkels, op 78-toerenplaten. Een groot aantal daarvan is nu liefdevol gerestaureerd en uitgebreid geannoteerd, zodat dit behalve een heerlijke verzameling liedjes ook een fascinerend inkijkje is in een verdwenen tijdperk.
Ook Curaçao ontsnapte niet aan de invloed van de Cubaanse dansmuziek, maar de conjunto's, Quarteto's en dergelijke roerden wat andere genres door de son, zoals de inheemse tumba, en speelden met een eigen soort goedmoedige ontspanning en vrolijkheid die nog altijd overkomt. De opnamesessies waren informeel, en volgens het boekje werd er stevig bij ingenomen, maar ondanks de verfrissende pretentieloosheid wordt er op hoog niveau muziek gemaakt. Trompetist Edgar Supriano bijvoorbeeld fleurt de nummers van de Estrellas del Caribe op met schitterend spel."
